European DPAs meet with search engines on the “right to be forgotten”

Press release along with the questions the Article 29 Working Party asked the search engines.

Several commentators have suggest the WPs approach is akin to an investigation. I would agree.

I have a lot of sympathy for the search engines (and others that will soon be snared by this ruling). While I have a deep respect for the European privacy regime, I question the EU’s execution. The ECJ made a ruling and the remedy is for search engines to make the decisions. A role they do not want and that they should not have. Now, many of the WP members are unhappy with the way some of the search engines have operationalized the ruling. I don’t think this is a mess that the search engines should be cleaning up.
