DHS Chief Doesn’t Use Email- What does that tell you?

Janet Napolitano doesn’t worry about Petraeus’ fate befalling her because she doesn’t use email. As the article astutely points out, if the person running DHS doesn’t think email is safe (particularly given all the technical resources at her disposal) how is everyone else supposed to feel secure.

  1. I think this is a common practice. Well maybe not as common as it should be. I know the Governor of Florida and many of his top staff don’t use email in order to avoid disclosure under public records laws.

Also I question the article’s suggestion that she doesn’t use email for security reasons. Her exact statement was “Well, um, OK, don’t laugh, but I just don’t use email at all. For a whole host of reasons, I don’t have any of my own accounts. So, you know, I’m very secure. … Some would call me a Luddite, but that’s my own personal choice.”

I’m suspecting that she’s more aloof than prudent, ala Ted Stevens and his series of tubes or George H. W. Bush’s lack of knowledge of bar code scanners.
