“Santorum” and the Responsibility of Search Engines

Should search engines be responsible for their content? This New York Times article that reads a bit like an opinion piece, provides a high level summary of the issue in the context of the search results returned by Google when you type in “Santorum”. Warning: the first result will not please conservatives and parents.

  1. I’ve been trying more often than not to use duckduckgo.com as an alternative to Google because I’m trying to avoid the filter bubbles that Google puts in place attempting to guess what I want. Now some are suggesting that Google filter it’s results even further? The fact remains that Dan Savage is protesting Rick Santorum’s positions on homosexuality. Yes. he choose to do so in a rather sensationalistic way but if his Google bomb were a treatise on why you shouldn’t vote for Santorum, would people be just as upset? I suspect not. Anybody searching Google for a presidential candidate should have the opportunity to see both positive and negative commentary, unless they choose to see only one or the other (not if Google or the thought police chooses so for them). Again, Dan Savage’s method is sophomoric but it’s successful because such brashness is the reason that we’re talking about it (and Rich Santorum’s positions) today.
