Apple close to completing its data center

Apple will soon complete its massive data center in North Carolina. It’s about 5 times the size of its New Jersey data center. Research firm Sanford Bernstein lays out five possible strategic uses for this data center:

  1. Scaling up media marketplace and advertising
  2. Cloud-based synchronization, including free cloud based storage
  3. A music streaming service starting at a low price – perhaps $5/month
  4. Aggressively priced video streaming service
  5. Voice Interface and Navigation Service.

The report is short and makes interesting reading. It notes that it’s difficult to glean much from its 10k about what its strategy might be. It also notes the enormous capital expenditures in IT that Apple is making. Apple would appear to be ramping up for a major strategic move.

We live in interesting times.
